Allelopathic action of parthenium and its rhizospheric soil on maize as influenced by growing conditions Planta Daninha
Safdar,M.E.; Tanveer,A.; Khaliq,A.; Naeem,M.S..
Biosynthesis and subsequent release of allelochemicals by a plant into the environment is supposed to be influenced by its growing conditions. To ascertain what will be the allelopathic action of plant parts and rhizospheric soils of parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) growing at various farm locations with varied growing conditions, germination and seedling growth of maize hybrid (DK 6142) were assayed by sowing its seeds in petri plates lined with filter paper and pots filled with soil. Minimum germination percentage (30.0%), germination index (2.01), germination energy (36.3), seedling length (3.3 cm), seedling biomass (10 mg) and seedling vigor index (99.0) of maize were observed in leaf extract followed by fruit and whole plant extracts of...

ASIF,M.; TANVEER,A.; SAFDAR,M.E.; ALI,A.; AHMAD,S..
ABSTRACT: Parthenium is an important weed which poses severe threats to yield and quality of sorghum and many other summer season crops, worldwide. As in other field crops, parthenium also reduces yield and quality of forage plants in forage crops so it should be controlled in forage and fodder crops. Parthenium control efficacy of five herbicide treatments (including dicamba at 304.5 g a.i. ha-1 (full rate) alone, dicamba at full rate + 1% ammonium sulphate, dicamba at full rate + 2% ammonium sulphate, dicamba at 75% rate + 1% ammonium sulphate and dicamba at 75% rate + 2% ammonium sulphate) was tested in field trials for two consecutive years (2013 and 2014). One manual hoeing three weeks after crop emergence was also performed as a treatment and weedy...

ESTIMATING YIELD LOSSES AND ECONOMIC THRESHOLD LEVEL OF Parthenium hysterophorus IN FORAGE SORGHUM Planta Daninha
ASIF,M.; AYUB,M.; TANVEER,A.; AKHTAR,J..
ABSTRACT A field trial was conducted for two consecutive years to evaluate the effect of different parthenium densities (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 plants m-2) on the yield and yield components of forage sorghum along with parthenium economic threshold level. The experiment was laid out during the summer in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Different parthenium densities reduced yield and yield components of forage sorghum, as the parthenium density increased significant decline in yield and yield components. The highest parthenium density (16 plants m-2) reduced plant height by 17.19% and 15.32%, stem diameter by 31.79% and 28.10%, leaf area per plant by 18.88% and 10.16%, leaf to stem ratio by 51.01% and 45.03% and fresh...

Exploring Parthenium weed biotypes by chloroplast DNA barcode analysis Planta Daninha
Anjum,Tehmina; Jabeen,Rasheda; Adkins,Steve; Akram,Waheed.
Abstract Background: Parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) is an invasive weed that has invaded vast regions of Pakistan in a relatively very short period of a decade or two, threatening the crop fields of the agrarian fed country. Parthenium hysterophorus L. is native of central South America and Gulf of Mexico, has now turned out to be a weed of global significance due to its alarming invasions and profuse spread in approximately all parts of the world. Its invasion is probably due to the contamination of its seeds in the imported grains from other countries of the world. Objective: During comprehensive sampling from Pakistan and Australia, it was observed that parthenium weed accessions exhibited several distinct morphological features...

Herbicidal Activity of Aspergillus niger Metabolites Against Parthenium Weed Planta Daninha
BASHIR,U.; KHAN,A.; JAVAID,A..
ABSTRACT: Metabolites of Aspergillus niger, prepared in malt extract (ME) broth and potato dextrose (PD) broth, were evaluated for their herbicidal activity against a noxious parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus). In laboratory assays, original (X) and diluted (½ X) fungal metabolites significantly reduced germination and seedling growth of weed. However, metabolites prepared in ME broth proved to have greater herbicidal activity than metabolites prepared in other growth medium. Original metabolites prepared in ME broth have completely hinder the germination of parthenium seeds; while those prepared in PD broth have reduced germination by 89% over control. In pot trials, one-week, two-week and three-week-old parthenium seedlings were sprayed three...
